1. Why a giclée and not just a photocopy?
In some cases photocopies are acceptable. If the medium is opaque, such as charcoal drawings, they work well, and provide an inexpensive way of sharing an otherwise unobtainable drawing. But the beauty of watercolor is in its transparency, and the way the various layers of color relate to each other. Inkjet prints might capture that transparency to some degree, but don’t last long.
Even original watercolor paints tend to be “fugitive”. They will fade over time if not cared for properly, for example by keeping them out of sunlight. Giclée prints will not only reproduce quite faithfully the original watercolor’s appearance by using transparent inks, they will stand up to a wider variety of circumstances than the original and for a much longer time.
2. What if I want a print of one of your paintings in a different size from that which is listed in the product information?

3. What are the hazy circular images on each of the product pictures?
Each of the online product images includes a toned-down copyright symbol to thwart any attempts to digitally steal any of the artwork shown here. The prints won't have that.
4. Is what I see on my computer screen exactly what I'll see when my print arrives?
Not exactly. Each computer or device screen will exhibit color its own way, and that may affect how these paintings look to you. But each print will be quite similar to what you are seeing online, assuming that your monitor is fairly accurate.
5. Do I need to frame my prints?
Watercolors normally look better when isolated from their surroundings with a mat, and presented under glass, with or without a frame. The mat and glass protect the print from airborne contaminants, moisture, and curious fingers. Each image on JanFrench.com lists the printed image size and a suggested frame size. These figures presuppose that the print will be matted.
6. Where should I get a frame and mat?
My first suggestion is to go to a professional framer. Your closest framer can be found by searching the internet for "picture framers in (your area)", or on FindAPictureFramer.com This site provides a listing of all Professional Picture Framers Association members, and a search tool so that you can find one near you.
Another source is www.PictureFrames.com/ but if possible, shy away from using mats that are the same margin measurement on all sides. (See “8. What about standard mats?” below.)
Many urban areas are close to a Michael’s, Aaron Brothers, or a similar art/crafts supply store. Most of those provide framing services.
7. What does “standard frame size” mean?
Popular frame sizes are standardized for mass production. When one of the images on this site will fit well into a standard frame size, it is mentioned in the product details section under the product image.
8. What about standard mat sizes?
Standard mats are mass-produced to be used with standard frames, placed either vertically or horizontally. Of necessity, all four sides are equal in width. Although purchasing a standard mat is tempting because it is cheaper, the result looks cheaper, too. Professionally cut mats will allow a slightly larger width on the bottom edge of the mat in order to overcome the optical illusion of imbalance that occurs when all four sides are equal. To fully enjoy your purchase, treat yourself to a professionally cut mat. (See “6. Where should I get a frame and mat?” above.)
9. What if I need to return a print?
You may return most new, unopened items within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. We'll also pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.).
You should expect to receive your refund within four weeks of giving your package to the return shipper. However, in many cases you will receive a refund more quickly. This time period includes the transit time for us to receive your return from the shipper (5 to 10 business days), the time it takes us to process your return once we receive it (3 to 5 business days), and the time it takes your bank to process our refund request (5 to 10 business days).
If you need to return an item, simply login to your account, view the order using the "Complete Orders" link under the My Account menu and click the Return Item(s) button. We'll notify you via e-mail of your refund once we've received and processed the returned item.
